Day Trip to Schilthorn Piz Gloria: A Journey Through the Heart of the Swiss Alps
When the weather isn’t cooperating for Jungfraujoch, there’s no need to despair—Schilthorn Piz Gloria offers an equally stunning mountain experience with a fraction of the crowds and cost. This was our Plan B on a cloudy, rainy day, and it turned out to be one of the most scenic and adventurous parts of our Swiss trip. Here’s how our day unfolded and why this iconic destination deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Why Schilthorn?
Situated at 2,970 meters, Schilthorn offers panoramic views of the Alps, including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The summit is also home to the famous Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and the James Bond exhibit, a nod to its role in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
While the summit is a showstopper, the journey there is equally remarkable, taking you through charming villages, thrilling cable car rides, and serene mountain landscapes.
Getting to Schilthorn: Two Scenic Routes
From Lauterbrunnen, you have two options to reach Schilthorn:
- Via Stechelberg:
Bus to Stechelberg → Cable car to Murren → Cable car to Birg → Cable car to Schilthorn. - Via Grutschalp:
Cable car to Grutschalp → Scenic train to Murren → Walk to the next cable car → Cable car to Birg → Cable car to Schilthorn.
We chose the Grutschalp route as it was the first ticket office we encountered upon arriving in Lauterbrunnen. While slightly more expensive, it’s faster and includes a scenic train ride.
The Journey: A Series of Alpine Highlights
Step 1: Cable Ride to Grutschalp
The cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp whisked us up to a small, car-free mountain village surrounded by lush meadows and breathtaking views. Grutschalp is a serene starting point for hikes, mountain biking, and even skiing in the winter.

Step 2: Scenic Train Ride to Murren
Next, we boarded a quaint train that meandered through the picturesque Alpine landscape. The ride was short but incredibly scenic, with views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and towering peaks.
Step 3: Exploring Murren
Murren is a postcard-perfect village perched high above the valley, with no cars to disrupt the tranquility. The streets are lined with traditional Swiss chalets, charming cafes, and breathtaking viewpoints. We strolled through the village, stopping frequently to admire the vistas.
If you have 1 day to spare, Murren is surrounded by beautiful hiking trails that offer stunning views of the Alps. Some of the most popular ones include the Northface Trail, the Murren Panorama Trail, and the Schilthorn Via Ferrata. And you can also visit Allmendhubel flower park, located above Murren and features a large playground.
From Murren, a cable car took us to Birg, where the adventure truly began.

Step 4: Thrills at Birg
Birg, located one cable ride below Schilthorn, is home to two adrenaline-pumping attractions:
- Thrill Walk:
This cliffside pathway features glass panels and a wire mesh section that lets you peer straight into the valley below. It’s both exhilarating and slightly terrifying!

2. Skyline Walk:
A suspension bridge offering panoramic views of the surrounding Alps, perfect for photos and a dose of vertigo.

We skipped Birg and took the final cable car up to Schiltorn. But later when we came down, we stopped at Birg to soak in the views and conquering the Thrill and Skyline Walk.

Step 5: Schilthorn – The Summit Experience

At 2,970 meters, Schilthorn is a feast for the senses. On clear days, you can see as far as Mont Blanc and the Black Forest. Here’s what we loved:
- Piz Gloria Revolving Restaurant:
Dining with a 360-degree Alpine panorama? Yes, please! The restaurant is a culinary and visual treat. - James Bond Exhibit:
Fans of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service will love this small museum featuring movie memorabilia and interactive displays. Even the ladies’ restroom has a James Bond audio surprise! - Snowy Fun:
Though summer, patches of snow made for playful moments, with kids and adults alike throwing snowballs and enjoying the icy setting.

Step 6: Stopping at Lauterbrunnen

On our way back, we stopped in Lauterbrunnen, often described as one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. With its 72 waterfalls, verdant meadows, and quintessential Swiss charm, it’s a must-visit. Highlights included:
- Staubbach Falls:
A short walk from the village center leads to this iconic waterfall cascading down the cliffs. - Trummelbach Falls:
A unique series of glacier-fed waterfalls inside a mountain, accessible by elevator and walkways.

Top Tips for Visiting Schilthorn
- Check the Weather:
The weather can change quickly in the Alps. Always check forecasts and webcams before heading up, as visibility at the summit can make or break your experience. - Plan Your Route:
Both routes to Schilthorn are scenic, but the Grutschalp option is faster and includes a scenic train ride. - Use a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card:
These passes significantly reduce the cost of cable car rides. - Dress in Layers:
Even in summer, it gets chilly at higher altitudes. Pack light but warm clothing. - Start Early:
Beat the crowds by heading out early in the morning, especially during peak tourist season.
Final Thoughts
Our day trip to Schilthorn was a perfect blend of adventure, scenery, and Swiss charm. From the peaceful village of Murren to the thrilling heights of Birg and the cinematic allure of Piz Gloria, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard.
If you’re visiting the Jungfrau region, make sure Schilthorn is on your must-see list—it’s a journey you won’t forget!
