A Journey to Jungfraujoch: Top of Europe and the Ultimate Swiss Adventure
Visiting Jungfraujoch, famously known as the “Top of Europe,” is an experience of a lifetime. Nestled between the majestic peaks of Jungfrau and Mönch in the Swiss Alps, this breathtaking destination is home to Europe’s highest railway station at an altitude of 3,454 meters. Here’s what you can expect, along with some tips to make your journey unforgettable.
Getting to Jungfraujoch
Reaching Jungfraujoch is half the adventure, with multiple routes offering stunning views:
- Lauterbrunnen – Wengen – Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch (by train)
- Grindelwald – Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch (by train)
- Grindelwald to Eigergletscher (by gondola) and onward to Jungfraujoch (by cogwheel train)
We chose the route from Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg, opting to stay in Grindelwald to reduce travel time and beat the peak crowds. This choice proved invaluable in making the experience more relaxed and enjoyable.
Planning for the Perfect Day

A clear day is essential to truly appreciate the panoramic views at Jungfraujoch. The morning we visited, the weather forecast predicted 10 hours of clear skies—a dream scenario! We quickly packed up and headed out early, armed with winter gear (even in summer), including sweaters, ultra-light down jackets, and gloves for the kids.
Pro Tip: Always check the weather forecast the night before and again in the morning. Avoid pre-booking tickets too far in advance, as bad weather can ruin the experience—and it’s too costly for a cloudy or stormy day.

The Journey Up: Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch
We arrived at Grindelwald Grund before 8:30 AM to purchase tickets. The helpful staff informed us that seat reservations were necessary for the busy day ahead. While we reserved seats for both the ascent and descent, we later realized it’s better to reserve only for the ascent, so you have flexibility on your return.

Our journey began with a train ride to Kleine Scheidegg, a picturesque mountain station at 2,061 meters. Nestled at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, Kleine Scheidegg offers incredible views and trails. We had 30 minutes to explore, snap photos, and soak in the scenery before boarding the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch.
The Final Ascent: Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch

The 30-minute train ride from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch is an engineering marvel, with tunnels carved into the mountains. The train stops twice along the way, allowing passengers to view the glacier through large windows—a mesmerizing glimpse of the icy world ahead.

At Jungfraujoch: What to Do and See
Once at the top, there’s a wealth of activities and attractions to explore:
- Sphinx Observatory:
Perched at the peak, the observatory offers unmatched panoramic views of the Alps.

- Ice Palace:
Wander through tunnels of ice sculptures—a magical and otherworldly experience. - Alpine Sensation:
This exhibit highlights the history and culture of the Jungfrau region. - Hiking Trails:
Take a trail to Mönchsjoch Hut or simply enjoy the pristine alpine beauty.

- Snow Park Fun:
Our kids, Fabio and Achita, were thrilled by their first experience with snow. After a few tentative steps, Achita got the hang of it and quickly turned snowball fights into an art form, much to her brother’s delight. We rented sleds and spend many hours sledding down and went up with the magic carpet usually used for beginner ski slope.

- Dining with a View:
After hours of fun in the snow, we relaxed at one of the restaurants, enjoying hearty Swiss food while soaking in the mountain vistas.
Tips for a Memorable Visit to Jungfraujoch
- Save with the Right Pass:
Tickets to Jungfraujoch are among the most expensive in Switzerland. We chose the Swiss Half Fare Card, which offered a 50% discount (compared to 25% with the Swiss Travel Pass). Children travel free with a Swiss Family Card, making it a fantastic deal for families. - Check the Weather:
Avoid bad weather days—it’s not worth the trip if visibility is poor or if snowstorms prevent you from venturing outside. - Stay Close:
Consider basing yourself in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen for a few days to ensure flexibility and minimize travel time. - Reserve Seats Early:
During peak season, trains to Jungfraujoch can be packed. Reserve seats for the ascent but keep your return flexible.
Final Thoughts
Our trip to Jungfraujoch was truly the highlight of our Swiss adventure. From the awe-inspiring views to the simple joy of playing in the snow, it was an experience we’ll never forget. Fabio and Achita still talk about the glacier, the snowball fights, and the unforgettable scenery.
If Jungfraujoch is on your bucket list, I hope these tips help you make the most of your journey. Have fun at the Top of Europe!
