Annecy: France’s Prettiest Village and the Venice of the Alps
Tucked away in southeastern France, Annecy is a storybook destination often hailed as the “Venice of the Alps.” Its pristine turquoise lake, meandering canals, and cobblestone streets of the medieval Old Town create a postcard-perfect scene that feels almost unreal.
A harmonious blend of natural splendor, rich history, and vibrant culture, Annecy has earned its place as one of France’s most enchanting towns—a dream destination for anyone drawn to Europe’s old-world charm and stunning lakeside views.
Visiting Annecy had always been a dream of mine, yet it seemed too far off the beaten path to fit into my itineraries. That was until my sister and I decided to spend our year-end holiday in the Alps. With this perfect opportunity, Annecy finally found its way onto our destination list—and it was every bit as magical as I imagined.
When to Visit Annecy
- Spring to Early Autumn (May to September):
The best time to visit Annecy is during these months when the weather is mild, flowers are in full bloom, and outdoor activities like boating, cycling, and hiking are at their peak. - Winter (December to February):
While less crowded, winter is a magical time for snow lovers. Annecy is a great base for skiing or snowboarding in the nearby Alps.
Getting to Annecy

The nearest airport is Geneva Airport (GVA), about 40 km away. From there, you can take a train, bus, or rent a car to reach Annecy. - By Train:
Annecy has direct train connections to major French cities like Paris (Gare de Lyon, 3 hours 42 minutes). The station is conveniently close to the town center. - By Car:
Driving offers flexibility to explore the scenic routes around Annecy. It’s about a 1-hour drive from Geneva and 2 hours from Montreux, making it a great day trip from Switzerland. This is our chosen mode of transport as we are going to the Alps and we will need a car for flexibility and we also want to enjoy the scenic mountain scenery. We drove around 4 hours with few stops from my Sister house in the Provence. - By Bus:
Companies like FlixBus connect Annecy to cities in France and nearby countries.
