Nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne and surrounded by majestic mountains, Lucerne is often called the gateway to Central Switzerland. Known for its medieval charm, iconic wooden bridges, and easy access to nearby peaks like Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, Lucerne offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
How to Get to Lucerne
Lucerne is well-connected, making it a convenient stop on any Swiss itinerary.

The easiest and most scenic option, with frequent connections from Zurich, Geneva, and Bern.
Our experience: We took a beautiful two-hour train ride from the Jungfrau region, passing the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, which rivals Lake Thun in its glacial beauty. - By Car:
Driving is an option, but Lucerne’s city center is pedestrian-only, and parking is limited and costly. - By Bus:
FlixBus and Eurolines offer services to Lucerne from Zurich and other European cities. - By Air:
Zurich Airport is the nearest international hub, with direct trains to Lucerne taking about one hour.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at the Ibis Budget Hotel, just 900 meters from the train station—a convenient location with flat walking paths. The hotel provided a free bus pass, a perk offered by most accommodations in Lucerne, making it easy to explore the city. With buses frequently running to the train station and city center, it was a hassle-free experience.
What to Do in One Day in Lucerne
1. Visit Chapel Bridge and Water Tower
No visit to Lucerne is complete without seeing its iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke).
- Why It’s Special:
- Built in 1332, this is Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge.
- Inside, 17th-century pictorial panels depict Swiss history and the lives of the city’s patron saints.
- Water Tower:
Adjacent to the bridge, this octagonal tower (built in 1300) has served as a treasury, prison, and even a torture chamber. Today, it’s home to the Lucerne Artillery Association and a colony of Alpine swifts.
2. Explore the Old Town
Lucerne’s Old Town is a maze of narrow streets, historic facades, and charming squares.
- Don’t Miss:
- The hidden garden near the clock tower offers panoramic views of the city. Finding it can be tricky—walk past the locked church gate and look for a small path on your left.

3. Stroll Around Lake Lucerne
Instead of a cruise (we had already done one on Lake Thun), we opted for a leisurely walk along the lake.
- Highlights included:
- Watching swans and ducks delight Achita as they glided gracefully across the water.
- Taking in the serene beauty of the lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
4. Visit the Lion Monument
Carved into a rock face, the Lion Monument is a moving tribute to the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution. The detail and emotion in the sculpture make it a must-see.
5. Day Trips and Excursions
While we stayed within the city, Lucerne is a great starting point for nearby attractions:
- Mount Pilatus: Take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway for breathtaking views of the Alps.
- Mount Rigi: Known as the “Queen of the Mountains,” Rigi is a favorite for hikers and nature lovers.
- Swiss Transport Museum: A family-friendly spot showcasing Switzerland’s rich history of trains, planes, and automobiles.
Our Final Night in Switzerland
As the day turned to dusk, we returned to our hotel, reflecting on our unforgettable two-week summer journey through Switzerland. With just 5 days in this beautiful country, it felt like we had only scratched the surface.
Lucerne was the perfect finale to our trip—a city that blends old-world charm with stunning natural surroundings. One day wasn’t nearly enough, but it left us longing to return.
