Sumba Trip itinerary

We went to Sumba in December during christmas and new year. Not exactly the right time to visit Sumba because of the rainy season. But it was the right timing for us; we have christmas and New Year holiday and the kids are in school holiday.

It rained a lot on the day we wanted to go to the waterfall, and we had to cancel because the access to the road was closed.

Our Itinerary

Day 1

Flying Day: We fly from Jakarta to Denpasar and Denpasar to Tambolaka with Wings Air.

Our flight got delay by 2 hours, so checking-in to Hotel Oro Beach was later than scheduled and we had to cancel a visit to Rumah Sumba. After late lunch in ohr Hotel, we go straight to Pantai Mananga Aba to see sunset. Dinner at Warung Gula Garam

Day 2

Long Road Trip

  • Pantai Mandorak
  • Danau Weekuri
  • kampung adat Ratenggaro
  • Pantai Pero for sunset.
  • Dinner in Warungku

Day 3

  • Kampung adat Praijing
  • Lunch in restaurant Daun Ubi
  • Savana Lapale
  • Lapopo waterfall (we didn’t go because it was raining and the access was closed)

  • Sunset at Pantai Marosi.

  • Bukit Wairinding
  • check in Villa Morinda in Sumba Timur

Day 6

Explore East Sumba

  • Puru Kampera,
  • Lunch in Mr Cafe,
  • Desa Rende,
  • Walaikiri Beach
  • Bukit Persaudaraan
  • Pelabuhan Waingapu.

Day 7

Check out Villa Morinda and fly from Waingapu airport to Denpasar, Bali.

Tips:

  • There is one beautiful waterfall we didn’t get to visit and you should include in the itinerary: Tanggedu waterfall. It was not feasible for us to go to Tanggedu with a 2.5 years old girl because you need to hike for 2.5km to reach the waterfall. I If you aren’t travelling with young kids, put Tanggedu waterfall in your itinerary.
  • There are not many option of eateries along the journey. Every morning we would stop at Rumah Makan in the center to buy food for our lunch and have a picnic in our destination
  • Avoid coming during rainy season if you have packed agenda.

Our Reflection

Sumba is raw but beautiful. Infrastructure is not as developed as Bali. There are section of the road which is not maintained. Phone reception in some parts of the journey is patchy or non-existent.

Sumba has it all; beautiful rolling hills, stunning waterfall and beautiful beaches. If you want to venture out of Bali and likes a bit of adventure, put Sumba in your destination list. You’ll be surprised ❤️
