Flying with a Baby: Tips, Tricks, and Lessons from My Travels with Babycha

Babycha’s first flight at 2 months old

Traveling with a baby may seem overwhelming, but it’s absolutely doable—and dare I say, enjoyable—with the right preparation! My journey started when Babycha was just 2 months old, joining her first flight to Bali. Was it challenging? Of course. Tiring? Definitely. But for a travel-loving mom like me, it was all worth it.

With a bit of planning, the right gear, and a positive attitude, flying with a baby can be smooth and stress-free. Here are my tried-and-true tips for traveling with an infant.

Before You Fly: What to Pack

When traveling with a baby, packing is half the battle. Here’s what I brought to keep Babycha comfortable and happy:

In Your Hand-Carry Bag

  1. Earmuffs: Essential for reducing airplane noise and preventing overstimulation. They also come in handy during naps in noisy environments like restaurants.
  2. Pacifier: Great for soothing and helping reduce ear pressure during takeoff and landing. Not every baby needs one, but for us, it’s a lifesaver!
  3. Bibs & Muslin Cloths: To catch drool, spit-ups, or milk spills.
  4. Nursing Apron: For discreet breastfeeding whenever your baby is hungry.
  5. Wet Wipes & Disposable Diapers: Must-haves for diaper changes and quick cleanups.
  6. Cleansing Nappy Lotion & Cotton Pads: Gentle and effective for keeping your baby clean.
  7. Foldable Changing Mat: Makes diaper changes more convenient and hygienic.
  8. A Change of Clothes: Accidents happen—always have at least one spare outfit for your baby.
  9. Plastic Bags: For storing used diapers or soiled clothes until you can dispose of them properly.
  10. Small Airy Blanket: Keeps your baby cozy during the flight.
  11. Hat & Baby Carrier: A hat for sun protection and a carrier for hands-free convenience during boarding or exploring your destination.

In Your Suitcase

  1. Bath Gear: A foldable bathing chair or inflatable bathtub (depending on the hotel’s bathroom setup).
  2. Extra Diapers: Pack enough to last the trip—better to have too many than not enough!
  3. Baby Toiletries: Gentle products like head-to-toe wash, nappy cream, and minyak telon (a soothing oil mix).
  4. Clothing Essentials: Bring more clothes than you think you’ll need! Include pajamas, cardigans, leggings, socks, and plenty of drool-friendly outfits.
  5. Swimming Gear: If you’ll be swimming, pack a baby swimsuit, floatie, sunglasses, and a sunhat.
  6. Extra Muslin Cloths: You’ll never regret having spares.

Other Gear to Consider

  1. Stroller: Choose a stroller based on your destination. For outdoor adventures, a sturdy stroller with big wheels is best. I used the Quinny Zapp Xtra-2, which was perfect for both indoor and outdoor settings.
  2. Car Seat: Rent one at your destination or bring a compatible travel car seat. I used the Maxi-Cosi, which also doubled as a baby carrier.
  3. Baby Food & Utensils:
    • For babies on solids, bring convenient options like Heinz, Gerber, or Rafferty’s food jars.
    • Utensils: A bowl with a lid, a spoon (I recommend the Tommee Tippee heat-sensitive spoon), and a straw bottle or sippy cup.
    • A small cooler box (I used Medela) for keeping food fresh during travel.

For Baby who is already on solid food

Traveling can disrupt your baby’s eating habits, so variety is key. If your baby eats rice porridge at home, try introducing other carbs like oats, potatoes, or quinoa beforehand. This will make them more adaptable to jar food while traveling.

Here’s what I brought for Babycha:

  • Breakfast: Instant oats, like Heinz Blueberry Oats, which can be prepared with hot water.
  • Lunch/Dinner: Creamy-based jar foods (not tomato-based).
  • Snacks: Heinz custard (banana or strawberry-banana), fruit gels, or fresh fruits.

Flying with a Baby: What to Expect

1. Boarding & Takeoff

Be prepared for a bit of chaos, but don’t stress—airline staff are usually very helpful with parents traveling with babies. Use a baby carrier or stroller to navigate the airport, and keep your essentials handy.

During takeoff and landing, help your baby manage air pressure changes with a pacifier, breastfeeding, or a bottle.

2. Managing the Flight

Stick to your baby’s usual routine as much as possible. Maintain their meal and sleep schedules to avoid crankiness. Use earmuffs to create a calm environment for naps, and keep toys or books handy for entertainment.

Mindset Matters: Happy Mom = Happy Family

Traveling with a baby is undoubtedly tiring, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. The key is to stay positive, be flexible, and embrace the chaos. By planning ahead and keeping a good attitude, you’ll not only survive the trip—you’ll create amazing memories along the way.

Babycha’s travels have taken her to Bali, Lombok, Semarang, and even Perth—all before her first birthday. And every trip reminds me that with the right mindset and preparation, you can absolutely keep your love of travel alive, even with a little one in tow.
