Year-End Holidays Planning: Are you Team Airbnb or Hotel?
The year is wrapping up! While some are hustling to meet year-end goals, others are easing into the season, eagerly anticipating the holidays. For me, the year-end break is a cherished time—it’s when my family’s schedules finally align. While summer used to be our go-to, my son’s university calendar abroad has shifted our focus to December. Plus, with work slowing down and even my bosses heading out on vacation, December feels like the perfect time to unwind.
But let’s be honest: year-end travel comes with its challenges—soaring ticket prices, fully booked accommodations, and tough-to-get visa appointments. That’s why advance planning is essential. I usually book flights by September, secure visas in October, and finalize accommodations the same month.
If planning feels overwhelming, consider this: for me, planning isn’t just a chore—it’s part of the fun! Crafting itineraries, choosing places to stay, and imagining the trip ahead are things I genuinely enjoy. Whether you love planning or prefer leaving it to a travel agency, here are some accommodation options to suit every traveler:
Types of Accommodations
1. Hotels
Hotels are a classic choice. With 24/7 reception, breakfast options, and luggage storage, they’re reliable and versatile. Websites like Booking.com and Agoda make it easy to find one that fits your budget. For frequent travelers, loyalty programs with hotel chains like Marriott, Hilton, or Accor can add extra perks. Over time, I’ve shifted from booking hotels from Booking.com to Accor chain hotels to rack up loyalty points—it’s a win-win!
2. Apartment Hotels
For a bit more space, try apartment hotels (also known as aparthotels). These combine the amenities of a hotel—like 24/7 reception—with the comfort of an apartment, including kitchens and laundry facilities. Chains like Citadines or Adagio are great examples.
3. Apartments or Houses (e.g., Airbnb)
Platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Plum Guide let you experience destinations like a local. Whether you need a cozy home or a spacious apartment for your family, these options offer flexibility. Be mindful of details like check-in times and cancellation policies, as they vary by property.
4. Hostels
Hostels aren’t just for budget travelers—they’re hubs for socializing and exploring. With dorms or private rooms, shared kitchens, and prime locations, hostels are ideal for solo travelers or those looking to meet others.
What Works for Us
Our accommodation choices have evolved over the years:
- In My 20s: Hostels were my go-to. Affordable, social, and centrally located, they were perfect for solo adventures. We had good experience with Hostels in places like Scotland and New Zealand.
- In My 30s: As our family grew, boutique hotels became our preference. They offered charm and character, ideal for shorter stays.
- Now: With two kids and the need for more space, we’ve embraced a mix of Airbnb and chain hotels (we’re loyal to Accor!). Airbnb works well for stays longer than two nights, especially in smaller towns where hotel options are limited. For shorter city stays, we stick to hotels for convenience.
Airbnb: The Pros and Cons
What We Love:
- Cost-Effective for Families: With a family of four, Airbnb is often cheaper than booking two hotel rooms.
- Home-Like Comforts: Full kitchens, living rooms, and laundry make long stays more comfortable.
- Local Feel: Staying in unique homes lets us experience destinations authentically. Some of our favorite stays have been in Seville, Grindelwald, and Tuscany.
What We Don’t Love:
- Late Check-Ins: Some properties don’t allow check-ins until 4–5 PM, making early arrivals tricky.
- No Receptionist: Self check-ins or key exchanges can be inconvenient.
- Uncertainty: Airbnb doesn’t show the exact location until you book. Careful research is key.
- Cancellation Policies: Some bookings are non-refundable, so always read the fine print.
